Heavy-Duty Automatic Transmissions

Authored by: Allan Zieser, STLE, CLS

Heavy-Duty automatic transmissions use a torque converter to connect the driveline with a fluid coupling. As such, these are hydraulic-based systems that utilize a completely different fluid from other types of transmissions.

They are similar in design to their cousins in the passenger car industry but are built to be more robust. These transmissions must deal with heavy loads, long idle times, and a lot of heavy shock loading. As a result, they require a more robust fluid to allow them to do their jobs efficiently.

Although this transmission type is slowly being replaced by the Automated Manual Transmission, there are a lot of them still in the market.  Allison is the major producer of automatic transmissions with others being offered by Caterpillar, Voith, and ZF. So, the question begs what is the proper fluid to use and where do I get it?  Well, luckily your Ottsen Oil Company Expert is here to assist you with your automatic transmission needs for your heavy-duty equipment. Let’s talk a bit about the oils offered.
