So, What Do I Need to Know About Coolants and Antifreeze?

Authored by: Allan Zieser, STLE, CLS

This month, we have featured the coolants and antifreeze lines Chevron carries as our focus. It is our goal to remind everyone to check and top off their coolants before the weather turns cold. With these new organic coolants, you need to use a refractometer to test the freeze point. Be sure and contact your Ottsen Oil Expert to find out more information on purchasing a quality refractometer from Ottsen.  We covered a lot this month, so here is a run-down of the products we covered this month.

Chevron Delo® ELC Antifreeze/Coolant – 8 Year / 1,000,000-mile coolant. Excellent for heavy-duty diesel or gasoline cooling systems. Available in 50/50 premixed or concentrate.

Chevron Delo® XLC Antifreeze/Coolant – 8 Year / 1,000,000-mile coolant. Designed specifically for aluminum cooling systems with CAB brazing, the cooling system found in newer equipment. This coolant can also be used in older systems. So, if you have a mixed fleet you can just use the XLC coolant across your entire fleet. Note: Caterpillar does not recommend using this for their equipment, they prefer the ELC as it is approved for Caterpillar EC-1.

Chevron Delo® XLC Advanced Antifreeze/Coolant – 8 Year / 1,000,000-mile coolant. Recommended applications are a little more varied and include heavy-duty engines regardless of fuel type or environmental controls being used where the OEM recommends a silicate free, extended life coolant that contains nitrites; mixed fleets where both light-duty and heavy-duty trucks are present; stationary engine applications regardless of fuel type being used; marine cooling systems where freeze protection is needed and a nitrite containing coolant is recommended.

Havoline® Universal Antifreeze/Coolant – 150,000-mile protection antifreeze/coolant. Designed

for all makes and all models of automobile and light-duty trucks, regardless of fuel type, built by American, European, or Asian OEMs.  This product is dyed yellow, which allows it to be used as top-up in any automobile or light-duty truck application without changing the existing coolant color. Havoline® Universal is recommended for use in general service applications where cooling system warranty maintenance is not required. Mixing of Havoline® Universal with other products will reduce its extended life properties.  Note: These products are not to be used to protect the inside of potable water systems against freezing.

So, with all of these choices for extending your drains on your antifreeze/coolants why would you choose any other product? Contact your Ottsen Oil distributor for more details on the proper antifreeze/coolant for your systems.
